Non Profit of the Year
Krista Jones has lived in the Hudson Valley for over 20 years, brought to the area as a radio reporter on WDST and WKNY in Kingston. She later took a position as News Director/Morning Show Co-Host on WRNQ-FM/Clear Channel Radio of the Hudson Valley and served in this capacity for over 15 years.
After marrying and giving birth to three beautiful redheads, the local mom was looking to do something more. When her friend, a mother of three, was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer, Krista’s immediate response was, “let me cook them dinner.” Night after night, the Hopewell Junction resident left warm, homemade meals on the struggling family’s doorstep and realized she was able to give her friend comfort during her cancer fight. Not long after, 4 other friends were diagnosed with various cancers and while cooking for all of their families, Krista knew this was something she could do for the masses.
In 2013, Sparrow’s Nest took flight. In its inaugural year, the charity fed 16 people. Today, the charity feeds over 350 people each week, feeding more than 2,000 people since its inception. The charity originally made meals out of Krista’s home but moved the Nest to a new location in 2017 at the Summerlin Plaza in Wappingers Falls, NY. In that year, the charity also expanded its mission to feed not only caregivers of children, but children themselves diagnosed with cancer. During that year, the Board of Directors voted to also expand the mileage in which the charity feeds, from 20 to 35 miles, bringing the non profit’s mission to 5 counties in New York State. This mission change and expansion allowed Sparrow’s Nest to feed families staying at the Ronald McDonald home, located on the grounds of Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.
Krista serves as the Executive Director and sits on many of the board’s committees. She was chosen as a 2014 Pandora Hearts of Today winner, receiving $25,000 for Sparrow’s Nest. In the community, the charity continues to receive praise and recognition, receiving the 2014 Organization of the Year Award from the Junior League of Poughkeepsie and the 2015 Headliner Award from the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce. Also in 2015, Sparrow’s Nest was chosen by the Dutchess County Organization of Women as Charity of the Year. In 2016, Krista was named Woman of the Year by the American Association of University Women and was an Athena award winner in 2017. In 2018, Sparrow’s Nest Charity received over $100,000 from MidHudson Subaru’s “Share the Love” campaign and Krista was recognized by the New Paltz Chamber of commerce as the 2018 Woman of the Year. Most recently, Krista received the 2019 Falcon Award for Business Excellence in Dutchess County.
